The downspouts of Helsinki
Shortly after arriving to Helsinki, for my first visit ever, this summer – I noticed the downspouts in the city. At first I thought, they where special for just some buildings. But no, – they where very common. They have pathways cut into the sidewalks let the rain from downspouts escape out to the street. I wonder how that fits with heavy rain.
Surfing the net there was very little to find about this peculiar detail – so why not – here my little survey in finish architecture in the field of downspouts.
They are quiet visual in the city architecture, – a part of the street experience. The box shape of the downspouts climes the buildings, or might be build into the structure but still visual. The pathway – the gutter beneath the downspout can be made of stone, or just marked in the concrete.
